Meet July’s Artist Discovery: Angie McMahon

July 23, 2019

Meet Angie McMahon

Introduction

Meet Angie McMahon, the powerhouse singer/songwriter hailing from Melbourne, Australia. Her songwriting is rich, raw, and sometimes brutally honest, and her vocal delivery ranges from just above a whisper in her deep register to an incredibly powerful Florence Welch-like belt.

In the first 12 months of her career, she rose from playing small rooms to selling out 1,500-2,000 capacity venues on her first headline Australian tour. She entered the nation’s festival circuit playing Splendour In The Grass, Laneway, Groovin’ The Moo, and has shared stages with Father John Misty, The Shins, Alanis Morissette, Angus & Julia Stone, Leon Bridges, Mumford & Sons, and The Pixies. Having already broken significant ground in Australia, she’s making splashes in the US. In March 2019 she won the prominent Grulke prize at South By Southwest, which highlights developing artists (past winners include Courtney Barnett and Jade Bird), and she’ll open for Hozier on his US dates in Fall 2019.

Listen to a few songs from her debut album Salt here!

We asked Angie a few questions to get to know her better – check out her responses!

Q & A

Who is the first artist you remember listening to?
Dusty Springfield, when someone gave me one of her CDs for Christmas, I was very young and made everyone at lunch watch me dance to “Little by Little”. I have no idea what music I was listening to before that day.

Where is your favorite place in the world?
Maybe the river near my house where I walk my dogs through the trees. It’s very beautiful and quiet down there.

What is the best live show you’ve seen?
Bon Iver at Best Kept Secret festival in the Netherlands this year, or Angel Olsen at Meredith Festival in Victoria a few years ago. Or Bruce Springsteen. He might be the best.

What are some things you have to have on the road with you?
A spiky massage ball, Voltaren gel (it’s a localized muscle relief cream), noise cancelling headphones, hot water bottle or heat pack, a notebook and pen, a TV show downloaded onto my phone to watch on trips, and I always buy blueberries.

What album do you play on repeat?
Ghost of Tom Joad by Bruce Springsteen, A Deeper Understanding by The War on Drugs, Masterpiece by Big Thief, If I Said Only So Far Take It Back by Mia Dyson, I Wasn’t Only Thinking About You by Oh Pep.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?
Bon Iver probably, or Gillian Welch.
