Meet March's Artist Discovery: CAAMP
Meet CAAMP, the Ohio band we’ve picked as our Artist Discovery for March! Conceived in 2013 by high school friends Evan Westfall and Taylor Meier and rounded out by their friend and bass player Matt Vinson, their indie-folk sound has taken them on the road all around the country, including an impressive recent run supporting Rainbow Kitten Surprise.
We asked the band a few questions to get to know them better - check out what they had to say!
What was the first album you ever owned on vinyl?
Evan: The first vinyl I ever owned was Fleetwood Mac gifted to me by my aunt and uncle in 2013. I had just gotten a record player for my birthday and I pretty much turned the needle into a stub from spinning it so much.
Who is the first artist you remember listening to?
Evan: The first artists I remember listening to were Tom Petty and The Clash thanks to my parents when I was in grade school. They took me to see my first show in '06. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers 40th reunion in Columbus. Stevie Nicks came out on stage and I had my first sip of beer.
What’s the best live show you’ve seen?
Taylor: The best show I’ve ever seen was Blind Pilot at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus. They’d been my favorite band for most of high school and the venue is hallowed to Columbus natives. The show they put on was like a watercolor portrait of their records - amazing. They ended the show in the pit with everyone sitting and we all sang One Red Thread.
What album do you play on repeat?
Taylor: An album that I can’t get enough of is 'Michael Nau and the Mighty Thread'. He’s one of the best songwriters on earth In my humble, and this record is a great chapter of his book. Really I spin all his stuff constantly - Cotton Jones too!
Where is your favorite place in the world?
Matt: The whole Georgia Theatre venue in Athens, GA. The amazing stage / crew, green room and rooftop restaurant make it one of the most pleasant places to play as an artist. Possible tie or close second is Athens, OH our heart.
What have you been listening to lately?
Matt: Dr Dog, especially ‘Easy Beat’ and ‘Be the Void’, Buck Meek's self titled record, Brent Cobb, ‘Shine On Rainy Day,’ Ona, ‘American Fiction.’
