Meet June's Artist Discovery Act: Becca Mancari

Meet Becca Mancari. She is our Artist Discovery Act this month. In just a short period of time, she has made quite the name for herself in Nashville and the Southeast. Becca always shines with authenticity and her music truly displays her strong sense of identity. She is an incredible person, on and off the stage and we had the privilege of asking her a few questions.

Get to know Becca:

1. What do you always take on the road with you?

I always take my own pillow and blanket. And I always try to take a book that I'm working on finishing!

2. What's the best live show you've seen?

Seeing Alabama Shakes for the first time at Bonnaroo was transformative... watching Brittany and the band walk out on that Main Stage and getting to watch 60 thousand people cheering and knowing the words to all of their songs... I still get chills thinking about it.

3. What record do you have on repeat?

When I first heard Big Thief in 2016 I did not think I could love another record more than their first one which was coincidentally called "Masterpiece", but then their second record "Capacity" came out. The pure magic of it astounded me.

"Don't take me for a fool
There's a woman inside of me
There's one inside of you, too
And she don't always do
Pretty things"

Adrianne Lenker, is truly a poet. I think that Big Thief and Adrianne will be remembered as one of our greats someday.

4. If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?

Sufjan Stevens and Frank Ocean.

It would be a dream to work with both of these artists. I mean, without doubt, Sufjan is one of the greatest artists of our generation. I grew up listening to him, he helped me understand even the queer parts about me, and he's a master of sound. He's a brilliant wordsmith, but he's also a composer, and his sometimes simple layering of sounds destroys me every time.

As for Frank Ocean... I don't know! He just intrigues me so much. It feels like he has this deep sadness and I love how he's a hip hop songwriter and uses rhythm in non-traditional ways.

5. What have you been listening to lately?

Ezra Furman, Frank Ocean, Janelle Monae, Andy Shuaf, Erin Rae, Big Thief, Natalie Prass, Courtney Barnett!
